Hosted by Giles Alderson and co-host Andrew Rodger, we sit down and chat about her debut feature film Rose: A Love Story

We talk about how she went from making award-winning short films such as 'Rocket', 'Acoustic Kitty' and 'Set Adrift', to making her directorial debut 'Rose'. She mentions how she started from editing commercials, to editing shorts.

Jennifer talks about how she was inspired by a teacher, how she taught herself to edit and a great reason why you should make shorts or films.

She also discussed how restrictions are good in film-making and the importance of doing your homework. Why you shouldn't have too many expectations, how she got her agent and dealing with a million decisions.

We can't wait for you to hear this weeks episode and we also announce to winners of our competition, which took place last week. You don't want to miss it!

Synopsis: Rose: A Love Story is a chilling, deeply moving and critically-acclaimed horror thriller starring Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders, Jamestown, Bodyguard) and Matt Stokoe (Cursed, Jamestown, Misfits). Gripped by a violent, terrifying illness, Rose lives in seclusion with her husband, but the arrival of a stranger shatters the fragile refuge they have built.

The British film premiered at last year's BFI London Film Festival and received strong reviews. It was also nominated for the BIFA Raindance Discovery Award.

Sophie Rundle will next be seen in the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders, which is currently filming. Most recently, Sophie was seen alongside George Clooney in his recent sci fi feature The Midnight Sky.

Jennifer is currently filming a big secret TV series and her latest TV directing work The Snow Spider is on I-Player now.

ROSE: A LOVE STORY is released on the following platforms; Sky, iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google, Xbox, TalkTalk, Rakuten and BT

The Making of David Fincher’s MANK’ with Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, Make Up Designer Gigi Williams, Production Designer Don Burt and Costume Designer Trish Summerville

April 2, 2021

We are delighted to bring to you our SPECIAL bumper episode on the Making of David Fincher’s BAFTA & OSCAR nominated ‘Mank’.

Come join us as we go behind the scenes on how to create movie magic. We start with Giles Alderson and Andrew Rodger having a chat with 'Mank' Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt about going from Gaffer on Fincher’s Gone Girl to DoP on Mank and how he made the transition to make his debut feature film.

He talks pre production, how he works with Fincher especially during the repeated takes, what the process was to shooting in black and white and the camera they used.

Co host Phil Hawkins then joins Giles to chat to Make Up designer Gigi Williams about her process, the difference between shooting on digital vs. film. What she works on first how she collaborates with the HOD team and gives some brilliant Make Up tips.

We then chat to Production Designer and Art Director Donald Graham Burt AKA Don Burt about designing the film from preparation through the shooting. He explains why listening is so important in film-making, how he researches a project and how he created the 1930/s & 1940 style and look. And how you don’t have to appease to get ahead.

Finally we chat to Costume Designer Trish Summerville about how she created the look and feel of Mank through her costumes. She talks about working in teams, how to collaborate with actors to help create the characters and how to use colours and patterns to portray certain emotions!

Mank is available NOW on NETFLIX

Christopher Smith – Creep, Severance, Triangle and The Banishing - Making Independent Genre Movies

Christopher Smith – Creep, Severance, Triangle and The Banishing - Making Independent Genre Movies

March 30, 2021

We are delighted to have legendary director Christopher Smith on this weeks episode. He has been a firm favorite of host Giles Alderson who has wanted him as guest since the start and finally he is here to talk about his latest gripping film The Banishing.

Joining Giles as co host is fellow director Christian James as they discuss Chris’ journey to becoming a filmmaker. His first brilliant film Creep and how he met producer Jason Newmark who has since been a team with him pretty much all his journey as a filmmaker.

We also chat about pitching and personality, what he has learned as a director and agents and managers. We discuss working on set, why it is important to create a great vibe for actors and crew and why sometimes you have to lay down the law!

In 2004 Christopher Smith wrote and directed the nasty shocker CREEP, putting Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) front and centre as a woman stuck in the tunnels of the London Underground, pursued by something you really wouldn’t want to meet in the dark. Run Franka, run!

Smith hit the ground running with his 2006 pitch-black horror comedy SEVERANCE, about a team-building excursion that goes horribly, dreadfully wrong. Featuring a talking decapitated head, Danny Dyer on superb wideboy form, women blasting machine guns and one of the cheekiest pay-off lines in cinema history, this was a brilliant mix of the horrifying and hilarious that had audiences howling in delight.

In 2009 Smith went out to sea for the thrilling TRIANGLE, with Melissa George (The Slap) trapped in a hellish time loop on an abandoned boat, pursued by a hooded figure with a bloody axe. Nightmarish, gripping and intense, TRIANGLE showed Smith exploring uncharted waters with a genre film that engaged the mind, as well as bending it to breaking point.

Smith’s hugely enjoyable BLACK DEATH (2010), set in 17th-century plague-ridden England, had a terrific lead performance from the ever-reliable Sean Bean (Possessor), and an early role for future Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). It also featured a striking turn from Carice van Houten, that predated her similar forthcoming role in Game of Thrones.

After forays into family comedies (Get Santa) and TV series (Alex Rider), Smith comes back to the horror genre this year, with THE BANISHING, a spine-chiller set in Britain’s most haunted house, Borley Rectory, during World War Two. Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay is a young woman uncovering dark secrets in her new home, while Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible) is ghost hunter Harry Price, and John Lynch (Isolation) a sinister ‘man of God’. Smith expertly handles this handsomely mounted period mystery, twanging the nerves along the way, with creepy dolls, shadowy figures, religious mania and a couple of proper jolting shocks.

THE BANISHING is released on digital platforms from 26th March and will stream on Shudder beginning 15th April.

How to make a Sky Original Feature with ‘To Olivia’ Director & Writer John Hay and Producer Donall McCusker

How to make a Sky Original Feature with ‘To Olivia’ Director & Writer John Hay and Producer Donall McCusker

February 23, 2021

Giles Alderson sits down with Director and screenwriter John Hay & producer Donall McCusker to discuss their latest film 'To Olivia', now on Sky, which is the story of the tumultuous marriage between actress Patricia Neal and renowned writer Roald Dahl. It stars the fantastic Keeley Hawes and Hugh Bonneville and is a beautiful, heart warming , well made and brilliantly directed film.

Donall McCusker has produced films such as 'Falling for Figaro'. 'Division 9', 'Kajaki', 6 Days' and the 'Hurtlocker'. John Hay is the director and screenplay writer of 'To Olivia' but he's also directed 'There's Only One Jimmy Grimble', 'Lost Christmas', and some amazing TV work including 'Stig of the Dump', which was BAFTA awarded. They sit down with us to discuss how they made their latest feature To Olivia and what directing and producing tips could help benefit you.

We also chat about what makes a good line producer and how to close finance. Plus we learnt why you might want to film on widescreen format and what it's like working with child actors and how you have to treat it in an entirely different way.

We also dive deeper into why they decided to make this story on the legendary 'Roald Dahl' and how they got the finance to make the movie. They also talk about losing cast and how they deal with with replacing actors at the last minute, during pre-production.

We also get a little insight of their experience with working with Al Pacino, Katheryn Bigelow and Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz so make sure you listen closely as you really don't want to miss anything on this weeks podcast.
