This week Giles interviews writing and directing team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to discuss their impressive career and body of work from the indie scene to working with Marvel.
Anna and Ryan first made an entrance with their indie hit Half Nelson, which picked up a best actor nominee for a little known actor named Ryan Gosling. Following on from that they’ve managed to make an intriguing combination of creative indies as well as studio hits, Giles asks them how they balanced both kinds of projects, what their approach is to directing as a pair and how they’ve changed their filmmaking process in transitioning from film to digital.
We also chat about working within the unique Marvel Studios process, gauging the right audience for your film and knowing when to stop putting pressure on yourself as a director.
In our bonus episode for this week, Giles and Robbie discuss their strategies for dealing with criticism within the industry in a healthy way. Access this and our other bonus episodes on our Patreon Page.

Today we welcome folklore-horror director André Ovredal to discuss his new indie horror Mortal. Known for his found-footage modern masterpiece Troll Hunter as well as the chilling The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark André chats to Giles and Andy about his craft and process from pitch to shoot, including working with other top tier horror directors like Guillermo del Toro.
André covers the road to his first feature Future Murder which he wrote in 8 days whilst at film school, how he used this to move to commercials in the US and Norway, before developing the concept for Troll Hunter and eventually pitching it to a producer.
We get the insight into how a found-footage faux-documentary approach re-defined the filmmaking rules for André, the success of Troll Hunter before the challenges of finding the next project. André discusses receiving the script for The Autopsy of Jane Doe, pitching for it and being inspired by The Conjuring and Seven
Finally, we cover the development and production of Mortal, working with a Norwegian production, chasing the daylight on a winter shoot and working on VFX whilst directing Scary Stories with Guillermo del Toro
