Tuesday Dec 01, 2020
Tuesday Dec 01, 2020
Giles and regular co-host Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar chat to screenwriter and producer James V. Hart, known for his writing on Hook, Bram Stocker’s Dracula and Contact.
Jim expands on his story mapping tool The Hart Chart, how it came about when re-writing Dracula with Francis Ford Coppola, and how he has used it ever since in his own and writing and to help other screenwriters through workshops.
We get a full backstory into how Hook and Dracula went from the scripts no one wanted before eventually getting noticed and picked up by Spielberg and Coppola. Jim recounts his memories of Robin Williams and Bob Hoskins on the set of Hook, and Giles quizzes Jim on how he went about writing the sci-fi cult hit Contact.

Listen to our full talk at the American Film Market for earlier this month with regular hosts Giles Alderson and Ian Sharp joined by writer, director and producer Dan Mazer to discuss filmmaking on both an indie and studio level.
Dan talks about his start in the world of film through his writing for television with Sacha Baron Cohen on Da Ali G Show, how from there he got involved with writing and producing the features Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno. Whilst continuing to write further features Bridget Jones’s Baby and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Dan has also directed I Give It a Year, Dirty Grandpa and the upcoming Home Alone - the latter of which was filmed during the current pandemic.
Ian and Giles compare their experience on the indie side with Dan’s studio work, discussing how they’ve each managed to get their respective projects off the ground, dealing with financiers and maintaining good relationships with studios, as well as fellow producers and directors.
Finally, Dan discusses the strategy of releasing Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Amazon for on-demand viewing, why the decision was taken and how they used the timing of the global pandemic and the US election to their advantage.

Dominic Monaghan on Lost, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and his latest film Pet
Tuesday Nov 03, 2020
Tuesday Nov 03, 2020
Giles is joined by regular co-host Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar as they sit down and chat with cult actor Dominic Monaghan to discuss the psychological thriller Pet, a bold, unsettling chamber piece starring Dominic in the lead role of Seth.
Dom shares stories of his humble beginnings as an actor in the Manchester youth performance scene, why he got into acting and how he moved from regional theatre to acting on the stage in London to being cast in one of the biggest movie franchises of a generation - but what is the secret to giving off the ‘perfect hobbit vibe’ at a casting call?
We hear what it’s like to see Peter Jackson directing, along with the importance of building relationships with your fellow actors on set during a long haul shoot spanning almost 3 years.
Finally - do actors need to ‘purge’ past characters they’ve played that are bad for them? And how does one do this? To find out you’ll need to tune in but as a spoiler it involves a shaman and a bag of unidentified herbs…

Giles and Robbie are humbled to sit down and chat with the incredible tour de force that is Julie Delpy. Whilst many of us may know and love her from Richard Linklater’s the 'Before' series or her work with Kieslowski on the Three Colours trilogy, we also know her prolific directing career from her debut 'Looking for Jimmy' all the way up to her latest feature 'My Zoe'.
Julie talks frankly about her personal philosophy about film-making, her love of sci-fi and her directing process from writing to production to post - including how she made a name for herself at NYU by turning other students garbage footage into masterpieces in the edit suite.
We cover everything from collaborating with encouraging colleagues like Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater to navigating the nastier side of the film industry and dealing with industry sexism as a female actor making the route from acting to directing.
Finally, we discuss the practical nature of film-making, and how you can stay true to your own vision whilst adding others’ ideas into the mix in the hire wire art of directing.
This week’s sponsor is WeScreenplay
Our jury of studio execs, producers, agents, and writers are on the hunt for a script that’s just waiting to be turned into the next big movie. And these are people who can take a script and turn it into a film. They’ve done it before and they’re always looking for great writers to do it again.
Prizes
The WeScreenplay Features Contest is also giving away cash and prizes. The Grand Prize script will receive $1,000 cash prize and the top 3 scripts will receive WeScreenplay’s top-notch coverage.
But the best part about the WeScreenplay Features competition isn’t just the cash prizes and industry jury.
Every entry gets free script feedback!

This week Giles sits down (virtually) with the amazing Lucy Brydon, writer and director of Body of Water a beautifully made female-led drama backed by BBC Films and Film London.
Lucy reveals how she made her start in film whilst teaching in China, getting into short films and production work before starting work on Body of Water which started life as a short film.
We hear about the development process, from pitching the film as a short at festivals, to applying to the Film London development lab before being selected. Giles asks Lucy about her screenwriting process, the many changes the script went through and the importance of staying faithful to the original concept.
Finally, we chat about day to day life on set, working with the BFI and BBC to develop the rough cut and getting a cinema release amid lockdown.
