Giles Alderson sits down with Director and screenwriter John Hay & producer Donall McCusker to discuss their latest film 'To Olivia', now on Sky, which is the story of the tumultuous marriage between actress Patricia Neal and renowned writer Roald Dahl. It stars the fantastic Keeley Hawes and Hugh Bonneville and is a beautiful, heart warming , well made and brilliantly directed film.
Donall McCusker has produced films such as 'Falling for Figaro'. 'Division 9', 'Kajaki', 6 Days' and the 'Hurtlocker'. John Hay is the director and screenplay writer of 'To Olivia' but he's also directed 'There's Only One Jimmy Grimble', 'Lost Christmas', and some amazing TV work including 'Stig of the Dump', which was BAFTA awarded. They sit down with us to discuss how they made their latest feature To Olivia and what directing and producing tips could help benefit you.
We also chat about what makes a good line producer and how to close finance. Plus we learnt why you might want to film on widescreen format and what it's like working with child actors and how you have to treat it in an entirely different way.
We also dive deeper into why they decided to make this story on the legendary 'Roald Dahl' and how they got the finance to make the movie. They also talk about losing cast and how they deal with with replacing actors at the last minute, during pre-production.
We also get a little insight of their experience with working with Al Pacino, Katheryn Bigelow and Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz so make sure you listen closely as you really don't want to miss anything on this weeks podcast.

Joining us on this weeks podcast is Director, writer and producer Gerard Johnson who sits down with Giles Alderson (The Dare) and Dom Lenoir (Winter Ridge) to discuss how he directed the movie 'Tony' (2009), Hyena (2014) and his latest feature Muscle (2019).
We spoke about what it was like working with swingers, yes swingers! How Gerard creates his distinctive shooting styles and his workshops with actors to help set the scene. He mentioned how important it is to have close relationships on-set and what it means to have a good, strong bond with your DOP/Cinematographer to help create a unique pallet throughout his films. We also speak about how film-making is like going into battle, how he financed his movies, especially from France and why he decided to shoot 'Muscle' in two blocks.

Directors Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson chat to Giles Alderson and Robbie McKane about their feature film 'Synchronic', a mind-altering, sci-fi thriller, horror starring Hollywood stars Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey franchise) and Anthony Mackie (The Avengers franchise, Detroit) as two New Orleans paramedics who encounter a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug.
On this episode we talk about co-directing and how they managed multiple jobs, including Aaron as a cinematographer, Justin who wrote the screenplay and producing together. We dive deep into their history and the films that they've made before. The first one being 'Resolution', their second, 'Spring' and their third one 'The Endless'. We also dip into their fifth movie a little bit as well, which they made during lockdown.
At the moment, they are making 'Moon Knight' for Marvel. We also talk about why when it comes to making movies you should 'just do it'. We talk about investment, how you can get it and how the boys managed to do so on subreddit. We also talk about relationships in film and having cool strategies for getting people on board. This week Giles Alderson chats with Adam Leader, Richard Oakes & Neal Ward about their wonderful feature film ‘Hosts’. Which is a fantastic, home invasion, horror thriller with elements of sci-fi. It has already got to the top of the charts and it’s an incredible journey. Adam Leader & Richard Oakes directed the movie, they also produced it. Adam wrote it and Richard was the cinematographer. Neil is the star of the movie and he’s also been in features film such as ’Two Graves’ & ’24 Little Hours’. Two superb indie films.
So on today’s episode we talk about how having great visual and SFX is vital for a home invasion, gory, sci-fi. They talk about how they produced, shot & wrote the movie and directed together. We also talk about networking and how hard it can be for crew but how important it is for a filmmaker. We also talk about their YouTube channel, DarkFableMedia because that is the place where they asked people to invest in their film and made all of this possible. They successfully made enough money and filmed all of this in just 10 days.

This week we welcome back previous guest of the show writer, director and actor James Kermack to do a deep dive masterclass on how he made his 2nd feature Knuckledust.
James was last with us on Episode 21 of the Filmmakers Podcast, talking about his debut feature Hi-Lo Joe, he returns now having moved up significantly in budget to chat to Giles and Robbie about Knuckledust, an action thriller/caper with nods to Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino and Nicolas Winding Refn.
We cover everything in this episode from sourcing finance and actors to world-building through script and storyboards. James also appears in the film in a supporting role, so offers some candid advice on how to direct yourself as an actor/director.
Knuckledust is an incredibly ambitious film for its budget level, and excels in its visual style. We examine just how James managed to pull it off from script to shoot to edit.
